Chapter 7

CHOICES

They had a nice summer that year. With the new baby keeping Mom Bigfoot busy, Mark and Rita did most of the harvesting. One day Mark and Rita were playing around and throwing berries at each other. Mark chased Rita and when he caught up to her, they both fell to the ground. Mark looked into Rita’s eyes and felt something inside that filled him with excitement. They kissed a long, deep kiss.

After the kiss, Rita pushed Mark away. “Please,” she said, “I promised God I would save myself for my husband.”

Mark pulled Rita to him and embraced her. He said “I love you Rita, and I want to marry you.”

Rita asked “How can we get married in the wilderness?”

Mark replied “We’d have to go back.”

“Yes,” agreed Rita, “and I must go back to talk to my father about saving the forest.”

Rita replied “What about Mom and Dad?”

Mark said “Don’t worry, my love, they will understand.”

That evening at the cave, Mark communicated to Dad and Mom Bigfoot that he and Rita were leaving and would be gone at least for a while. Dad Bigfoot looked very sad, and Mom Bigfoot shed some tears, but when he made sure they knew that there were important reasons for this, they smiled and nodded that they understood.

Mark and Rita left early the next morning, each carried a pack with food. Rita also took some of her drawings with her. Dad Bigfoot guided them through the woods until they came to the cliff overlooking a paved road. Dad Bigfoot hugged both Rita and Mark, hung his head and disappeared back into the woods. Rita and Mark made their way down the cliff to the road. They were still dressed in deerskin clothing, so they knew they were bound to attract attention.

After reaching the road, they began walking. After a short while, a Joyce City Sheriff’s patrol car passed by and pulled over in front of them turning on the car’s flashing blue lights. Mark and Rita were taken to the Sheriff’s office. As they entered the office, the Sheriff was sitting at his desk.

The Sheriff looked at Mark and Rita, then turned to his deputy and asked, “What do we have here?”

Deputy Jones replied, “I don’t know, but they look like they belong in the woods.”

Rita walked toward the Sheriff; he immediately raised his hand motioning her to stop. The Sheriff asked “Are you two tree huggers or dopers? What’s your name?”

Rita stated “Rita, I’m Rita Burtow, Governor Bob Burtow’s daughter. May I use your phone?”

“Sure!” replied the Sheriff.

As Rita reached for the phone, the Sheriff hurriedly slammed his hand on the phone receiver.

The Sheriff said “You listen here, little lady. You’re not leaving here until we find out who your really are.” He turned on the speakerphone function, slid the phone to Rita and said, “Dial.”

Rita dialed a number with everyone listening. The number dialed began to ring. After several rings, the phone was answered with “Governor Bob Burtow’s office, Michelle Pack
